Of books, love and small things that matter

There’s a Hindu proverb that says: an open book is a mind that speaks; closed, a friend that waits; forgotten, a soul that forgives; destroyed, a heart that weeps.

I’ve always loved this proverb.

In our home, we have hundreds of books. Some have been with us for decades; others, just a few days. Sometimes, when the evening light starts casting shadows across the studio, I look at them and imagine they’re waiting for me. Missing me, even. Having a library is one of life’s greatest pleasures. It tells you who you are, who you were, and—if you look closely—who you might become.

On April 23rd, we celebrate Sant Jordi —a day when the streets fill with stories, roses, and people searching for something, even if they don’t quite know what, among book stalls.

Legend has it that a knight once arrived in a village terrorized by a dragon —tradition places it in Montblanc. The beast demanded human sacrifices, until one day the king’s daughter was chosen. Just as she was about to be devoured, the knight stepped in, killed the dragon, and saved her. From its blood, a rosebush of red flowers grew, and he picked one to give to the princess.

Since then, we’ve been giving roses and books every April 23rd —a small gesture for lovers that still carries the idea that, sometimes, good wins.

And we thought you might like a few recommendations for someone you love: If you feel like reading something that stays with you, go for Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury —a story about a world where books are forbidden, and thinking for yourself becomes an act of rebellion.

And if what you need is something gentler, something to hold on to, let yourself be carried away by The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy —a quiet, beautiful reminder of kindness, friendship, and the things that truly matter.

And if you’d like us to keep you company for a while —maybe while you’re enjoying the sun— take a look at our word searches. Or, if you need a companion for your train journeys, our sudoku books will do just fine. However and wherever you like. Just click here.

And that’s it. Until we read each other again, please—be happy.
