Of Love, Pumpkins, and Little Abductions

Autumn begins. The leaves are falling, the air smells of cinnamon apples, and the sky has a different shade of blue. You feel it, and so do we: Persephone is back home.

If you don’t know this Greek tale of wild love, here’s the short version. Hades, mighty lord of darkness and ruler of the Underworld, fell hopelessly in love with young Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest. So, as one did back then, he opened a huge crack in the earth, kidnapped her, and carried her off to his realm. Her mother, Demeter, went mad searching for her—understandably, right? Until she found out it was her own brother, Hades, who had caused all the misery. Naturally, she went straight to Zeus (because he always had to be in the middle of these “classic messes”). After much bargaining between Hermes, Hades, and a pomegranate —yes, it’s a long story, but a fascinating one— it was decided that Persephone would spend half the year with her mother above the earth —where nature flourished and crops thrived— and the other half as Hades’ wife and queen of the Underworld. And her grieving mother? Endless tears, which gave us the rains and snow, in other words: autumn and winter.

This myth also captivated the great sculptor Bernini. In his masterpiece The Rape of Persephone, he carved marble so masterfully that you can almost feel Hades’ fingers pressing into his beloved. Want to see it? Click here: Bernini’s Rape of Persephone. It will amaze you.
